Malham Show Fell Race - Saturday 28th August 2010

Image

Report by Chris Plews

After running in the event last year, Jo and I were spectators this time around. Watching the juniors head out first in the torrential rain we were thankful to have a relatively dry vantage point from the show marquee. (junior race photo http://www.sportsunday.co.uk/photo6074076.html).

The rain showed little sign of abating so the river crossing in the first 200m of the race was the least of the runners worries. However by 4pm when it was time for the seniors to set off there was a clearing of the skies and the sun began to shine. Results to be announced soon at http://www.malhamdale.com/showresults.htm.

A Race Win - Vale of Lanherne Chase. St Columb Major. - 11th Aug 2010

Image

Robert Gray took the first place trophy in the Vale of Lanherne Chase held in the old county town of St Columb Major near Newquay whilst holidaying in Cornwall. The 5.25 mile cross country course took runners from sea Level at St Mawgan Porth through ancient woodlands, bridleways and fields to finish at the towns Carnival venue .

The 600 feet climb added an extra attraction as did an imprompu costly diversion into a residents garden after Rob had taken the lead on an unmarked section and then had places to re-take again. In the races forty year history the trophy is now gathering its first Yorkshire dust.

You won’t recognize them without their lycra but we can assure you these are Wetherby Runners in their best glad rags and yes, they do scrub up rather well don’t they?

A few monkeys were won and lost and a good day out was had by all, definitely to be repeated. Thanks go to Ann for organizing it!

Wetherby Runners  - A Blast from the Past

Wetherby Founder and early members may well remember with fond memories one of our lady members Asa Brorsson. She was an enthusiastic and key member who helped establish, along with Claire and Andrea the social running groups on non club nights.

Asa has been in touch via E-mail and would lve to hear from you.

She writes:

Hi everyone!
Just a quick note to say hello, just checked out the website and remembered some good old times...

Life's good,I'm married now, hence the Nilsson instead of Brorsson and proud mother of a 19 month old girl, a little whirlwind thing.

Trying my best to get running but seem to have been injured or ill for the past 4 years. Every time I get reasonably fit, I either injure a very week ankle, get breathing problems (so stupid, kindergarten bugs most of them) or fall pregnant.
But have just started walk/running again so keeping fingers crossed!

Sweden is getting on the running wagon though we don't have nearly as many races as the UK does.
Seriously miss you all and hope you haven't forgotten about the foreigner...
Take care
Love Åsa

Wetherby Runners in Fell Rescue Drama

Image

Half way through the race on the descent from Round Hill (in the middle of no-where) Laura Marks did something daft and sprained her ankle. She was unable to move an inch from the spot but like a damsel in distress she was rescued by John Simpson and Pete Pozman who charged along in shining armour. They literally carried the pathetic bird for a quarter of a mile to reach the theraputic safety of a cold water beck where she could immerse the annoying limb and immediately reduce the swelling.

Along with Ann Dale who also abandoned her race and with excellent co-ordinated help from marshalls Karen, Phil, Jack, Kath & Bob from Otley AC to navigate the party to a waiting vehicle 2 miles further on, they finally made it back to Timble 2 and a half hours after they set off.

Thanks go to everyone involved from Laura Marks (slightly hobbling but sure to live).

A super Gala afternoon  for all the family, with a race that comes highly recommended  by 'Runners World'

Wetherby Ladies are in the spirit.

It was a night to remember .....at least for the dog walkers who would be scared out of their wits by pirates, chickens, 80's disco diva's, Spice Girls,Hawainan exhiles and many other outragious costumed runners charging along the 3 mile course of the latest Grand Prix Race.

Ann Dale had devised a devilishly 'public' show of a route which took runners through the Wilderness car-park alongside the A1 and over York Flyover before returning along the A168 link road south bound before turning at the roundabout to pass the Police Station.

Those who didn't want to entertain the masses could opt to forfeit a £1 towards Martin House Childrens Hospice (the clubs chosen charity for this year) and run in regular kit - funnily enough there weren't that many who didn't opt for the comedy alternative.

The resuts are on the Grand Prix Results page.

John Moore.

Wetherby Runners members were shocked this week to hear of the sudden passing away of John Moore. John was a stalwart of the management at Wetherby Sports Association, the home of Wetherby Runners and had been instrumental in encouraging the founder members to consider establishing the club at its base on the Ings in 2004.

He was always very supportive of the clubs athletic activities and we soon recognised the benefit of his idea of a welcoming  full inclusion of WRAC into the family of the associated sporting clubs and this was in fact  based on the 'community ethos' which he held dear to his heart.

Being bubbly and enthusiastic came naturally to John, he was a passionate sportsman, a keen tactician and a valued friend to many. Wetherby Sports Association was a big part of John’s life and sadly only in his passing is it clearer what a major part he played out in ours.

We offer our condolences to John’s family and many friends.

Image

Wetherby’s Mens and Ladies Teams made another attempt on the Knaresborough bedrace last week with mixed results.

The theme for the event was ‘occupations’ so the ladies picked the predictable but popular choice of Flight Attendants backed up by Alison’s cabin trolley float design while the boys went for off-duty Tom Cruise-aspiring, dog tag toting Top Gun pilots with their aircraft carrier.  The ladies have never been photographed quite so often by complete strangers…..

The highlight for Claire and Ann was being photographed with everyone’s favourite choir boy celebrity, Aled Jones. Songs of Praise is covering the event in one of their programmes to be aired next month so look out for that!

As for the race, well the boys got badly cut up by a rival team attempting a dangerous overtaking manoevre and finished up having a crash and losing lots of time slipping to 22nd overall, while the ladies took it steady and finished up with an almost identical time to last year and a joint 4th ladies team place, their best yet.

Not forgetting, WRAC’s participation in the bed race is also about raising money for our chosen charity, Martin House. A sponsor form has been around and collection boxes too. Thank you for your donations everyone.

Edinburgh Marathon, Scottish Half Marathon & Hairy Haggis Relay Race

Sunday 23rd May 2010

Report compiled by Rob Gray

Not least because it’s reputed to be the home of the UK’s fastest marathon course, Edinburgh has established itself quite a following in its relitivly short history. There’s more to an event than the race itself and here there is indeed far more to savour. The Scottish Half Marathon and the Hairy Haggis Relay were not mere side shows but a major part of a carnival atmosphere which saw the whole town taking runners to their hearts and onto the cobbled and the baking hot streets.

Image

The Scottish Capital

The Wetherby contingent were up for the festival, round two for some but for most it was just the first time they had got the bug for a running weekend away.

A train from York and rather than a flutter here amongst the crowds who are disembarking for the Knavesmires Race Course there is the chance of a flutter with ‘ Honest Pete’ as his predicted runners finishing times are proffered on a race card of epic Grand National style descriptiveness. Being ‘well stabled’ and ‘on the best oats’, were typical but running under the pseudonym of ‘Physio’s Delight’ didn’t bode well.

Image

The charm of an honest Irish Bookie.     On the roof terrace, hatching a Sunday race plan?

Marina, Moira, Laura, Alison & Andrea.

Saturday afternoon and what’s this, the sun has put in an appearance, and so as the group of 40 strong disembark from the train at Waverley Station there’s a collective sigh of relief to find that just  a short walk is needed to find the top class accommodation arranged by our tour guide Ann Dale.

Who would think there were fit elite marathon runners here but a group of 40 takes some corralling and apart from the stragglers and weary all are soon relaxing in their apartment suites just alongside the start line on Regent Road. With such a vibrant city atmosphere just on your doorstep some were lured away from their ‘five star’  well appointed residence. The alternative place to be seen if you weren’t preening yourself for an evening out was however the ‘roof terrrace’, from  where, as the evening drew on worried looks scanned the skies for the expected cloud and forecast cooler weather.

Alison Mallorie-Lewis said

‘Waking up Sunday morning and seeing rain, I was delighted!...
....Unfortunately that was to be short lived, at 10:00... PING!.... as if by magic, the sun appeared and ironically dampened my spirits somewhat. Quite freakishly it was going to be yet another hot Marathon day. I had an idea that this would be a repeat of last year, running around in the mid-day heat, trying to catch any shade, gagging for water and having a frizzy mane.  I knew now that Honest Pete’s prediction was only something to dream of (3:50 was anyway but I hoped I might have been able to knock a few minutes off in cooler conditions). ‘Hairdressers Dream’ was now a living nightmare, runners were collapsing at the side of the road and a lot walking quite early on, I just kept going, taking on water at every station. My legs felt heavy at 23 miles and I just kept putting one foot in front of the other willing for mile 26 to appear....Finally the end was in sight, running over the rubber boards to the finishing line was hard work but I’d made it!
It took me 4:10:48 secs. A PB for me at last! (3 mins faster than last year) despite the hot conditions.’

With so many events dovetailing into the course at various times it was good to get the friendly support of other club runners around the route and so welcome

Image

Claire Close and Garry Keenan in close company.

Asked what she enjoyed most from the day Laura Marks said

‘The very welcome yet totally  unexpected support from Wetherby folks, which always caught me by surprise wherever it appeared although I’m sure I didn’t seem very grateful; the kindness of strangers – two runners in the finish area who literally lifted me back on my feet when I was on the floor and couldn’t make my legs work.’

She did have some other trying moments as well as feeling a little overcome emotionally

Low points, there were many – finding out the reputed ‘all downhill’ first 6 miles wasn’t what it was cracked up to be; being unable to decide what was worse – the heat, the boredom or the Garmin telling me my pace was slipping away; at mile 20 getting a familiar calf twinge which meant cramp is on its way and the plan will fall apart, and it did.’ ‘But a whole renge of emotions, losing the plot on the roof terrace during an impassioned speech by Andrew Wheeler. I’m not sure what crying and laughing at the same time is – crarfing perhaps. Anyway,

I was reminded to be grateful I could run a marathon at all and I have since remembered passing an amputee who was running for Help for Heroes and that puts it all into perspective’

Image

Champers on the Roof Terrace - 'Jolly Good Show'

Alison also appreciated the help

‘I would also like to thank Andrea for putting up with me for the weekend! And cheers John for the lifts to and from York Station.
Well done and Congratulations to everyone this weekend, you were all stars! Whichever race you did it’s a fantastic achievement. I’m glad to have such good running pals to be able to spend a bit more time socialising and catching up is an extra bonus…
-I’m now off to the hairdressers the heat from the sun has damaged my mane....

The heat certainly played its part and got to everyone, even the marathon veterans in the club. Caire Close said’

‘I thought I was safe with a Scottish marathon but the curse of the Sahara struck again and I found myself running another hot one.  Despite the heat I had a great time and really enjoyed the race and weekend (part due to Ann's excellent organisation).  I think I will enter the North pole marathon next time.  Surely that will be cooler.....’

Debbie Wheeler summed up with

‘Such a beautiful city to run in and a very good natured atmosphere amongst the runners and marshalls. Far too hot for running, but chilled champagne on the roof top terrace on the Sunday evening, overlooking Arthur's Seat and celebrating everybody's achievements was kinda special !

And all had praise for our organsing tour leader

‘I would like to thank Ann, she really does a wonderful job, organising everything for us. A real star! If it wasn’t for her we probably wouldn’t attend at all which would have been a real shame. Thanks Ann.’

Champions - first home for Wetherby Chris Plews and Lisa Mawer

It had indeed been a fantastic weekend away, good running, some testing conditions, but most of all enjoying the companionship and friendlyness of the great company of fellow Wetherby Runners.

From Iceland to Cape Town.

3 Peaks, a wide smile and a future Challenge

By Richard Bewell

Ok, so a volcano erupts, ash hovers in the atmosphere, flights are cancelled and you’re “marooned “in Johannesburg, South Africa – wadayado?

The glass being half full, we decided to make the most of it by catching an internal flight for a week’s R & R in Cape Town – what a place, a real adventure playground for kids of all ages! Mountain Biking, Walking, Shark Diving, Swimming, and of course …..running.

I was initially disappointed at missing the highlight of the Fell Racing calendar, The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Race, but the backdrop of Table Mountain provided inspiration for an alternative 3 peaks challenge. Run from Cape Town Bowl to Table Mountain at 3500ft, then Lion’s Head at 2100ft and finally Signal Hill at a mere 1200ft, approx. “Why not?”

A steady ascent to the foot of the cliffs of Table Mountain was rewarded with a breathtaking contour run, prior to the steep zig-zag slog up Patterklip Gorge. Hot, steep, energy sapping, but with stunning views, the summit of MaClear’s Beacon was bagged in a little over 1½ hours, complete with a beaming smile and the Yorkshireman’s euphoria of saving cash by not paying for the cable car.

Descending to the saddle at Kloof Nek the route led me up Lion’s Head, again with stunning views in the late afternoon South African sun.

After consuming more than 3 litres of fluid, & dripping with sweat, I was glad to reach the final peak at Signal Hill, where one lady asked if I had enjoyed my swim? Not sure if she was serious and too tired to care, I nodded, smiled, dripped a little more and staggered down the hill to finish.

Total run time:  3 hours 53 mins exactly the same as my Yorkshire 3P time last year …spooky!

Although shattered, I did learn afterwards that I’d only completed a very diluted version of the Cape Town 3 peaks: The real race is run every November. About 50km of ascent & descent, taking in Devil’s Peak, Table Mountain & Lion’s Head. The sting in the tail being you have to return to the (sea level) start after each peak, equating to more than 10,000ft of climbing!Sounds like an awesome challenge - anybody fancy it in November 2011? Check it out at:

Tadcaster Sprint Distance Triathlon - 4th May 2010.

Image

The ever popular Tad Tri was back again this year with a slightly different cycle and run route and transition area some distance from the Tadcaster swimming pool. Good times were had by the Wetherby Runners, many having Tad as a spring starter to the Tri season.

The 14km cycle route, this year gave lung busting Windmill Hill the swerve and said hello to the wicked ascent of the same hill but via Bramham  and around the narrow lanes by the church.

After the transition by the Coors Brewery  the runners headed west into a headwind and along Wetherby Road to the village of Newton Kyme. Then a scenic but pottential ankle twisty route along the river bank back to Tadcaster to be greeted by the welcoming crowds.

Results are on our Road running section.

Harrogate Summer Road Race League. Race 1 -Thursday 29th April 2010

Hi everyone

Just to say a big thanks to everyone who took part in last night's first race of this year's Harrogate Race League at Ilkley. The  weather was damp and the number of competitors was down by 40 on the last running of this course 2 years ago, but we got a good turnout and some good results to match which starts this year's campaign off with a swing.

The notable highlights were:

Lisa Mawer 3rd lady overall and first lady veteran to finish.
Scott MacVicar finishing in 5th, achieving the highest place finish by a Wetherby runner since we started participating in the League in 2005
Juniors Caroline Lambert 2nd Under 18 and Luke Broadbent the sole Under 16 participant, both counting in the Wetherby team 'Main 10' result
Andrew Moodie and Paul Emmett taking 2nd and 3rd MV45 places and Laura Marks 3rd FV45
Third place for the Men's veterans (over 40s) team despite carrying heavy legs from Fountains 10K and the 3 Peaks at the weekend
Third place for Lady Veterans (over 35) team in a bid to retain the Lady Veterans shield won last year.
Fourth place for both the Main 10 team and Ladies open 5 team.
Fifth place in the Elite 3 competition - which adds the times of the fastest three runners of the Club together.
Debut appearances in this League from Andrew Moodie, Paul Emmett, Caroline Lambert, Francis Lee, Jo Keenan and Jo Rankin.

Wetherby will need to perform consistently in the remaining 4 competitive races in the League and produce a high turnout each time if we are to keep hold of or build on these really good team achievements so far.If you have not done so already, please make a date for Thurs 20th May which is the next race to be run. Venue is Temple Newsam. Details are already on the official website. http://www.harrogate-league.co.uk/
Thanks

London Marathon 25th April 2010.

Image

There were perfect conditions for the 37,000 London Marathon competitors last week and six Wetherby Runners put their season’s training into effect with some excellent performances over the 26.2 miles. Paul Windle achieved a Personal Best time of 2 hours 57 mins and 32 secs, coming in first for the Club and setting a new age category best time for men Over 45.

Mark Tobin ran a disciplined race to finish in a PB time of 3.10.56. Ann Dale put down a new Ladies Club record for the distance in 3.28.10. Garry Keenan did well to finish after suffering the effects of a tummy bug in 3.37.15. Emma Coster made her debut marathon in a satisfying 3.50.28 and Gavin Ritchie notched up a PB in 4.27.22.

Wetherby Juniors Mia Moore and Emma Megarry represented Yorkshire in the London Mini Marathon, the sister race for 11-17 year olds from the London boroughs, 13 English counties and Scotalnd, Wales and Northern Ireland. Over the 3 mile distance both produced excellent performances. Mia was 29th in her age group in 19m 39 secs and Emma was 35th in her race in a time of 18m 54 secs.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Fell Race Sat 24th April 2010

Image

Whether it was 'old scores to settle', bringing on new challenges or the magnatism of the iconic fell race for theYorkshire born. Wetherby's runners, with mixed feelings of fear and trepidation stepped out for the equivilent of what London is to the Marathon runner on their day.

Well they would if they weren't marooned in South Africa or gnashing teeth as injury casualties. Of the eight expected only Pete Pozman, Claire Close, Robert Gray and Mark Young were sunning themselves in Horton-in-Ribblesdale with 24 miles and 5,000 feet of climbing ahead.

Claire as an experienced marathoner had been inspired years ago when walking the three Peaks and seeing 'these blokes actually - running  - in shorts - up the hills'. Mark Young was out to crack the 5 hour barrier, Rob wanted to see off 4 hours and Pete, well he's 'just mad for it' so says Mrs Pete.

An interlude now of huffing, cramping up, pain, wanting to lie down and generally wishing to be somewhere else. Then some hours later a feeling of sucess and elation. What it is to be a runner.

 Skipton Tri - Sunday 18th April 2010

Image

Steve Close tries out his form at an early season sprint triathlon at Skipton. He is planning a series of sprint tri's in the next few months with bigger plans in mind for later in the year. Steve found Skipton an ideal testing ground.

Finishing a creditable 293rd out of a large field of 700 which fell away during the race to only 593 finishers. Steves improved finish time on 2009, he gives credit to coaching in the pool during the winter from 'The Bewells'.

His performance  gave him a finish time 7 minutes better than last year. 1 Hr 25 min 35 seconds.

Hull 20 Mile Road Race - Sunday 28th March 2009.

Image

A windy morning in Hull was the testing ground for eight Wetherby Runners who have their sights on a spring marathon. Amongst a field of almost 400 the six pictured below along with Andrea Normington and Alison Mallorie-Lewis were teeth gritted and race headed. A time to test the strength and nuitrition plans for the day on this flat course. They admitted the breeze added an extra factor but, ... well that's running for you.

Afterwards? - Satisfied and blistered but bring it on!

The Moonlighters say 'farewell'.

........until the  autumn

Image

Heralded as a great success for sustained winter training the 'Moonlighters' winter evening training sessions have drawn to a close this week. The runs took place every alternate Tuesday evening at 7pm with a variety of routes and distances which primarily kept the runner off road. Reportadly they've encountered  trecks across snowy wastelands, rain lashed and overgrown muddy  bridleways, flooded streams and the occasional sheepish encounter. Sounds fun!

If you feel you missed out then fear not they will return in the autumn, Tuesday 12th October to be precise. The intention is to run two independent groups on different evenings.Maybe a 'mild' and 'bitter' version. In the mean time there is a Midnight Midsummer social run and barbeque (provisionally) on Friday 18th June.

Snake Lane 10m Pocklington - Sunday 28th February 2010

Rob Gray blasts in for a sub 1 hour finish.

With a following wind the runners turned into a bright and breezy Market Place in Pocklington on Sunday. Rob was Wetherby's front man on the day getting under the hour by one second. However close on his heels was Steve Close followed by Garry Keenan with an impresive new PB to celebrate.

Commondale Clart Fell Race, Castleton - Sunday 28th February 2010

The clubs Fell Captain Pete Pozzman makes his way gingerly across the moor.

At the eighth race in the Northern Runner/NEHRA Winter Series, tropical conditions were unlikely. At 2 degrees with sleet and a cold breeze on the tops after a week of  snow/rain, the course was very heavy going and lived up to its name of "Commondale Clart".

Following a short but steep initial ascent, the route took an undulating traverse of the moorland on well defined yet energy sapping boggy tracks before a fast descent back to Commondale.

Fell captain Pete Pozman put in a solid performance with a strong sprint finish to secure 6th V55 despite running with his tights inside out!

Judy Bewell had a navigationally perfect run, (for a change) with a beaming smile to finish.

Following the previous days cross country at Roundhay Park Mark Tobin and Richard Bewell both had good races finishing 17th and 2nd and collecting valuable points in the race series.

National Cross Country Championships Roundhay Park, Leeds - 27th February 2010

The Senior members- John Simpson,  Ian Legg, Ann Dale, Mark Tobin, Richard Bewell, Rob Gray and Tony Andryzweski in front

With the Nationals on the clubs doorstep it was with some homeground advantage that members made the twenty minute ride to the boggy Roundhay Park on Saturday. Junior members competed extremely well against strong opposition, (article and photo in the Junior section) and likewise the seniors were looking on nervously as the massive field of athletes from across the country gathered in seperate mens and ladies races.

First for the ladies were Ann Dale and Lisa Mawer in a mass start of 543. Lisa came away with the honours with a marvelous result in the top 100, finishing 77th. Ann worked hard on the challenging course and took the experience of the Cross Country League races to her advantage finishing 396th.

In the mens race a field of 1328 literally thundered from the start for a 12k race of 3 laps  taking in all corners of the Park. For Wetherby Richard Bewell finished 1st in 47 mins 44 seconds closely followed by Robert Gray, Mark Tobin, Ian Legg, Tony Andryzweski and John Simpson. The six man team secured the clubs FIRST national team placing of 74th of 107 complete teams

Castleton Beacon Fell Race - 14th February 2010

Image

With pictures above courtesy of David Aspin (Esk Valley Fell Club).

At six miles into the eight mile Castleton Beacon Fell Race (NEHRA/Northern Runner Winter Series) on Sunday Richard Bewell makes a determined move to take the lead from the Ambleside opposition as they made the return crossing of Ewe Crag Beck.

The pair had distanced themselves from the front pack on the tricky route near Castleton and Danby in the Northern reaches of the North York Moors. With early sections still with snow to contend with and wade through they had eased away from a close bunch who quickly took the lead. Course knowledge paid dividends for Richard however as he took some tactical advantages by straight lining a few corners and maintaining the work rate under the testing conditions. With a close fought race to the final mile he eventually had to settle for a third place overall.

There were other celebrations however for the Wetherby men as with support including Rob Gray, Chris Plews, Mark Tobin and  Paul Windle together they were awarded first Team place. Judith Bewell also ran a gutsy race in a field of over 100 finishers in this the seventh of the 11 race series.

Yorkshire Three Peaks - First recce Run. Sunday 31st January 2010

Image

A great achievement with the first peak under her belt Claire Close together with Chris Plews and along with other Wetherby Runners members showed their grit and nimble footedness on the slippery slopes of a snow clad Pen-y-ghent on Sunday morning. The conditions where perfect for the 8 mile first recce in readiness for the 23 miles race which is set for the end of April.

There are over 900 entered for the race and for those like Claire it may be their first challenge on these fells. With a little familiarisation however over the coming months and with increasing recce distances on the course with the club there will be fewer race day doubts for her to deal with.

This years squad includes some old hands in the event - led by fell captain Pete Pozman, together with Richard Bewell, Robert Gray and Chris Plews. are newbies to the race Lisa Mawer, Richard Moon and Claire Close.

The next recce which will be of 14 miles on Sunday 21st February starting at 10am and is from Horton in Ribblesdale. With a 10 minute train ride to Ribblehead. The run starts from here and follows a direct ascent of Whernside before dropping to the Hill Inn and then climbing Ingleborough followed by the long descent back to Horton. Any other members interested in taking part should contact any of the above on any Wednesday evening

Wilf Paish. Friday 29th January 2010

Image

It is with great sadness that we heard of the death last Friday of Wilf Paish. He had become a great friend to our club over the past 3 to 4 years and supported quietly behind the scenes our development through his practical and knowledgeable guidance of our coaching team.

He took a keen interest in the progress of our junior athletes and inspired all of us at the club young and old when he attended our club for the Annual Awards Presentation in 2007. We owe him a great debt and along with the wider athletics world will miss him sorely. Our condolences go to his wife Margaret and all his family.

Social Run with Otley AC members.Sunday 10th January 2010

Image

A Winter social run with members of Otley AC took place on Sunday. With spring marathons and half marathons in mind several members enjoyed a steady paced run of 16 miles. The route was from Boston Spa to Dalton Parlours, across country towards Thorner and through Bramham Park. Then into Bramham and via snowy country lanes towards Tadcaster. A return loop along bridleways took the party back onto the snowbound lane at Windmill Hill, Clifford before returning to Boston Spa.

Welcome to 2010

Jolly Holly Jog 10k - Monday 28th December 2009

Waiting for the gun and in fine fettle here are a group of Wetherby Runners at the ever popular trail race hosted by Ripon Runners. With fancy dress being order of the day there was an opportunity to ease off the pace and enjoy the scenery around Studley Royal and through the deer park on some of the slippery tracks.

Good performances from new member Caroline Lambert, Ian Andrews back from injury and also Jacky Darley despite a fall early on. Amongst the group in the photo are Andrea Normington, Andrew, Debbie and Matthew Wheeler, Chris Martin, Jacky Darley, Jo and Gary Keenan, Iain Andrews, Alison Mallorie Lewis and Moira Kramer,

   WRAC Christmas Party

Dont forget that the WRAC Christmas party is at the WSA on the 16th December. We are aiming to cover the cost of the evening for members without contributions, but if you want to bring your partner then we will be asking for £6 for non members.

Just to let you know that 'The Great Wetherby Beer Run' beforehand isn't compulsory, so please don't let that put you off coming to the party. The beer run is just a bit of fun for those that want to take part (providing the lake on the Ings has disappeared). There will be some normal runs on the night as well for those that don't want to do the beer run.

We look forward to seeing you on the 16th.

By the time Mark Tobin had made it back to the finish of the race (11th)

the waters had risen alarmingly and it was looking doubtful whether the

team would make it back to Wetherby.
